O'Neil joined O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while the singer was still in high school. She was able to advance into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' enthusiasm for the performance. O'Neil received excellent praise from her judges. She suffered significant losses during the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed to the bottom three or bottom two as well as the bottom two. Judges were horrified by this and informed the crowd they believed that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil was never in the top 3 after a series of consistently outstanding performance. The performance she gave on the 7th September, 2005 was so impressive that the judge Werner predicted that the headlines in the newspapers. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
